On the 10th June 2005, a demonstration took place at the door of the Town Hall of Villanueva del Rosario (Málaga) in protest of the development Aifos plan to build in the area. The project “Valle del Rosario”, which Aifos is promoting, is a macro-development to be located on land of great ecological value, according to one environmental group. It is argued that the development will cause an enormous amount of destruction to the vegetation on the Mediterranean mountainside in the surrounding areas of the land on which they plan to build the complex.
These facts have been communicated and denounced to the Delegation for the Environment. The Environmental Council has vowed to modify the Aifos project, due to the shortage of water in the town. Currently, the town does not have enough water, as it is, for the 3,400 inhabitants living there and a golf course needs to be watered regularly, without even taking into account the large quantities needed to supply the complex.
The Andalusia Water Board “Cuenca Mediterranea Andaluza” has stated that before the Town Hall approves of this project, it will have to establish the cubic metres of water necessary for supply and for the irrigation of the golf course, and therefore will also have to modify the plans that were initially submitted.
At the moment, the developer has ignored the warnings and the Town Hall is being rushed into approving the project without modifying anything.
