Marbella Residents Ask Public Works Council To Stop Illegal Building

Representatives from several associations in the Marbella area hold meeting with the Public Works Delegate Friday morning in Málaga.

These groups expressed worries over the town planning situation in Marbella and the consolidation of buildings that have not been terminated by the Town Hall, especially that of developments called Povisa, Alta Vista y Jardines del Príncipe, even though the Junta of Andalucía has contested them. Mr. Ruiz Povedano (Public Works Delegate) informed them of the Delegation’s firm intent not to revoke any licence that complies with the law although he did sign an agreement last January to draw up a new PGOU. At the same time, he confirmed that only judges and Town Halls have the power to terminate illegal building permits.

Povedano believes that resident participation is crucial in the drafting of this new town plan so as to solve some problems in the town and in order to guarantee this, he is asking all the groups involved to take an interest.

Representatives from all the groups were shocked that Town Hall members themselves had appealed the request at the Supreme Court instead of respecting the law and looking after the general interests of the city. These appeals are very costly and are paid for with public funds from a Town Hall that is technically bankrupt and has to increase taxes to afford these expenses.

The groups at the meeting said it was a total contradiction that despite the promises made by the government for absolute collaboration, they still refuse to give relevant town planning information to the Provincial Town Planning Committee
