“A Technical Error” – This is what the Mayoress of Marbella, Marisol Yagüe, reiterated yesterday in order to justify the fact that the town government had awarded planning permission that does not follow PGOU guidelines (town planning laws) of 1986. Leopoldo Barrantes, secretary general of Marbella Town Hall, believes it is a simple error that can be dealt with promptly, that the error occurred because there had been two very similar files and that anyone could have made the same mistake.
Marisol Yagüe tried to put on a brave face even though it was obvious she was rather angry. She thanked José María Ruíz Povedano – the district representative of Public Works – for contesting the planning permission. Without his intervention, they would not have been made aware of the error and they would have authorised planning for 32 apartments on a site that is reserved for the extension of a graveyard.
The first order that Yagüe handed down was to revoke the permit for the 32 apartments on San Bernabé Street. More importantly, she will grant planning permission to the other company that was affected so that they can build sixteen apartments, business premises and basements in three of the buildings on that same street.
This news caused some discomfort in the town government because if the planning permission had been granted and building had gone ahead, all those on the committee would have been charged with a crime against Town Planning. Obviously none of them want problems with the law.
